I bring this topic up every time I can. But I can't stress enough how much I hate social media.
I love the internet, I love going on neocities and seeing other people's web, checking all the links they have, and finding the most random websites. The internet is great. But social media… oh my god…
First of all, it's full of normies. I know I sound like a 4chan incel when I use the word “normie” but I don't know what else to you. They are normies, and social media has made it very easy for normies to come into the internet. Now, I don't, in any way, think that that's a bad thing. Connecting with others through the internet is awesome and everyone can enjoy it and should enjoy it. The problem is not so the normies, as it is more the normalization of social media. I swear, some people are just not built to have social media.
The internet is a place where you can find anyone. And by anyone, it's literally ANYONE. So, imagine my classmates from middle school, who made me feel ashamed for liking MINECRAFT, are now given a way to access all these different people, and address them with little to no consequences. What do you think is going to happen? They are so fucking mean. The internet should not be a place for close-minded people. And you know, sometimes a close-minded person can use the internet to view the world from a different perspective and stop being a bigot, but I feel like that's not very common.
So, not only is social media full of really cruel people, but also, social media itself is built to NOT be social. 10 times out of 10, if something sucks really bad, it's because of capitalism. In this case as well. So every social media is just full of shitty content, and the shitty algorithm promotes it, because it makes people rage, it makes them feel sad, or confused. But not connect. It makes us feel emotions so that we stay in that social media. But those emotions are just yours.
It doesn't matter how loud you express your emotions (if you even express them at all), because how will you be heard in a place where everyone is screaming. How can you connect with someone, if you know that in just a click they will go away to listen to the screams of someone else?
How can you connect with others when you are in a competition against everyone about who can scream the loudest? At the end of the day, we are all screaming, we all want to be heard, but we are all alone. Social media gives everyone a place to scream, but never a place to be heard.
This was supposed to be a lighthearted rant about how social media sucks, but the more I think about it, the more depressed I get.
And you know, maybe social media is not that depressing and lonely. Maybe I'm just protecting my depression and loneliness. But man, it's lonely.
